Clean Your Gutters
Clogged gutters cause water to back up under shingles. Clean twice a year — spring and late fall after leaves drop.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Branches rubbing shingles wear off granules. Falling limbs cause obvious damage. Keep trees trimmed back from the roof.
Watch for Moss and Algae
Southern Maryland's humidity encourages moss on shaded roof sections and black algae streaks. Moss lifts shingles and traps moisture. Zinc strips near the ridge help prevent regrowth.
Check Attic Ventilation
Poor ventilation cooks shingles from below. If your attic is stifling in summer, ventilation may need attention.
Annual Visual Check
From the ground with binoculars: look for missing, curled, or damaged shingles, rusted flashing, and sagging areas. After every major storm, do the same.
