Manufacturer Warranty

Covers defects in the shingles themselves. Architectural shingles typically carry 25-30 year or "lifetime" limited warranties. But read carefully: most are prorated after 10 years, and they don't cover installation errors — which cause most roof failures.

Workmanship Warranty

Covers installation errors. This comes from your contractor, not the manufacturer. Length varies hugely — from 1 year to 25 years. A strong workmanship warranty from an established local company is worth more than a long manufacturer warranty from a fly-by-night installer.

Enhanced Warranties

Manufacturer-certified contractors can offer enhanced warranties that cover both materials and labor for extended periods. These require using the manufacturer's complete system (shingles, underlayment, ridge caps) installed to spec.

What Voids Warranties

Improper installation, inadequate ventilation, pressure washing, and unauthorized repairs can void manufacturer coverage. Keep documentation of your installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'lifetime warranty' actually mean?

Usually the expected life of the product (not your lifetime), prorated after an initial non-prorated period. Read the terms.

Is a longer workmanship warranty always better?

Only if the company will be around to honor it. A 25-year warranty from a 1-year-old company is worth less than a 10-year warranty from a 15-year-old company.
